The island of transparent waters

By Debbie - 11:33 AM

NIGHT OUT

Next to the famous (for the Greeks) island of Milos, Kimolos is not being appreciated as much as it should be by the locals. With its transparent waters and picturesque villages it is the perfect place for calm and relaxed vacation. The tourism is low so the main town (chorio) has the perfect amount of quiteness with just two restaurants and two souvlaki taverns.

The main village of the island, "Chorio" as greeks call it, is a labyrinthine route of narrow streets around the -unfortunately abandoned- Medieval Castle of Kimolos and consists of typical cycladic houses with flowery gardens, three main squares, two bakeries, two restaurants and two souvlaki eateries. There are quite a few bars and cafes at the main square and at the lively alley of "Palia Agora" where it becomes the place to be for a night out. The recently opened -in 2008- Archaeological Museum of Kimolos is also located at Chorio as well as the impressive church of Virgyn Mary.

The absolute highlight of the island is its beaches: wonderful transparent waters and gorgeous sea bottoms with extraordinary rocky creations. Kimolos is an island that requires a car in order to be fully seen, however during summer there is a local mini bus which makes everyday trips to the best beaches.

The best beach of the island is Prassa, in the northeastern part of the island with white thick sand and wonderful seabed. It is a dreamy landscape with the wonderful beach bar "Kimolia" that makes the landscape even dremier with the compilation of relaxed music.
A wonderfully picturesque beach is located at the vilage of Goupa, a 15 minute walk from Chorio, where the surroundings create a unique experience. Here you find the famous elephant, a rock that took the form of an elephant in a natural way and now is the trademark of Kimolos. Other beaches are Aliki, Kalamitsi, Bonatsa three beaches in a row. Bonatsa is definitely the best among them, a wonderful sandy beach with a beach bar, fantastic waters and thick shadow from tamarisk trees.
At the southwestern part of the island, and after a long dusty walk you will find the beaches Dekas, Ellinika and the beautiful Mavrospilia. In Ellinika there is a sunken polis, so make sure you are equipped with masks, snorkels and flippers because the bottom of Kimolos deserves exploration.

The nightlife of the island not particularly a strength, as it is mostly suitable for relaxing holidays. However, the coffee bar "Lostromos" in Psathi (the port), the wonderful beach bar "Kimolia" in Prassa and the Palaia Agora alley in Chorio are very good options and you will not be dissapointed.

The food of Kimolos was quite gourmet for our taste and a bit expensive too, a thing I admit we did not expect. The two taverns at Chorio are offering sophisticated dishes and unfortunately none of them satified us. On the other hand, the two souvlaki eateries were a good choice, as well as the tavern "To Kyma" in the port which offers fresh fish by the sea. The tavern at Bonatsa beach had an excellent service but the quality of food was rather touristic. Overall, the food in Kimolos did not satisfy us (and we are not difficult at food!).

TIPS:
- Try ladenia, a kind of pizza with local sauce from dried tomato paste! It's delicious.
- See the elephant rock that has naturally formed at the village Goupa.
- If you can handle hiking (2.5 hours hike from Chorio) go and see the famous mushroom of Kimolos, another natural rocky creation in Skiadi.
- Go to the beach at Prassa , the best beach on the island.
- Wear your mask and make a dive in Ellinika beach to see the famous sunken city. The story (or myth) says that previously, Kimolos and Milos were one island until a part of them sunk in that area.
- Make a boat tour around the island and explore the caves and rocky formations that really impress.
- If you have time visit the island Polyaigos, the largest uninhabited island in the Aegean where you can go with an inflatable boat or as an organised excursion by Mr. Vangelis. (Timetable information : +30.6972 272 111)

Where we stayed:
At Prezanis rooms, 65 euros for a double room (late July) with beautiful handmade breakfast and excellent ladenia.
