One of the greatest archaeological sites in the Mediterranean city of Fethiye are the Lycian Rock Tombs. Located in the heart of the city, they are visible as you walk in Fethiye. It only takes a 20 minute hike from the centre of Fethiye and then a climb of around 300 steps to reach the highest and most important tomb, Amyntas Tomb. Being carved on the mountainside the beauty and architecture of these tombs are something unique.
Some historic facts: the city of Fethiye is located at the previously ancient Greek city of Telmessos and inhabited by the Lycians, an independent population originating from the Greek island of Crete. Amyntas Rock Tomb was built in 350 BC by the Lycians and was named after the Greek inscription on it "Amyntou tou Ermageiou", that was translated into english as "Amyntas, son of Hermagios".
Entrance to the site costs 5 TRY (1.5 EUR) but when we got there, there was no one at the small kiosk at the entrance. As the gate was not high some locals advised us to just jump it and climb up the Tomb. Best advice ever! Because you shouldn't miss this opportunity once you get there!
Climbing up the 296 steps you are surrounded by greenery and the landscape is getting better and better as you walk upstairs. When you reach the Tomb, turn around and the city of Fethiye will be right in front of your eyes in a panoramic view. Really breathtaking!
