One of the things that comes directly to mind when thinking of California is the long palmy beaches. Being in Los Angeles, one of our priorities was to visit and experience the beaches that all these years we were dreaming of, when watching Baywatch episodes (and wandering..do they really exist?). These vast ocean beaches with palm trees, boardwalks, tanned girls and boys, surfers, roller-blades, skate parks and of course the lifeguards! Ah.. the lifeguards.. you watch them and you think when they turn around you will see Mitch Buchannon's or Pamela's face.. You expect that from the yellow vans crossing the sandy beach will descend one by one the lifeguards and will run along the shore to save the victims from certain drowning. And it is like that. I mean we may not have seen the protagonists of Baywatch but we were in the sceneny and well.. it was sufficient!
We spent Easter Sunday by the beach. It was the best Easter of my life. We walked the vast beach of Santa Monica (3.5 miles) which is very organised. We saw picnic areas, amusement parks, chess parks, restaurants, cafes and of course lifeguards!
At the end of Colorado Ave. is located the bustling Santa Monica Pier dating from 1909 (!) which has several shops and an amusement park with the ferry wheel -its landmark.
☀
Walking on the Pier we found the legendary sign "End of Route 66" and of course it is a big touristic attraction. Route 66 starts at Chicago, Illinois and ends at Santa Monica, California, crosses 8 states and covers 2.451 miles!
☀
Looking over the Pier at the beach to our right, we saw a vast area with crosses on the beach, like a cemetery. An image both contradictory and spooky. Later, we learnt that this is the Arlington West Memorial, and every cross represents a soldier killed in Iraq war.
Among the variety of shops and restaurants on the Pier, one can easily distinguish Bubba Gump the one that appears at Forrest Gump and has now become a restaurant chain. Inside the store, apart from the amazing décor and the breathtaking views of the beach, there is a souvenir shop with all sorts of little things from the movie. We ordered our shrimp food to-go and we found a picnic area with ocean view and enjoyed our lunch.
☀
Walking along the Boardwalk (a specially designed path for pedestrians on the sand, beside another specially designed path for bikes, rollers and skates) we passed from Muscle Beach and after a 20-minute walk we arrived at Venice beach..jpg)
☀
Muscle Beach apparently was not named randomly. It is the beach to go and build (or show) your body. There is an outdoor gym and people actually use it (well, that in Greece would be either vandalized or used for different reasons, mainly the opposite of gymnastics). And the rest of us admire their bodies.
☀
Once you enter Venice, scenery changes incredibly. Street art, musicians, eateries, shops (like Green Doctors (!), Urban Outfitters, bike rentals) even a freak show (there was a man with piercing all over his face, without exaggeration, hideous) and a lot a lot of people. The beach was very exotic with spindly palm trees and white sand like powder. There was a skate park that attracted many people to skate and to watch the show.
☀
I felt we had died and went to heaven. Unfortunately we did not swim because April is not yet summer, not even at California! People were mostly enjoying the sun, excersising, pic-nicking or surfing. Finally we went to the canals of Venice, which had nothing to do with the original ones. We spent our afternoon at the trendy area of Abbot Kinney Blvd. It was a great day!
