Hel is a place on earth

By Debbie - 11:06 AM

HEL,POLAND
Continuing with the posts from our polish road trip, let's have a look at another magical and beautiful coastal city: Hel. The name of that city is like a joke. Maybe it is ironic. Or perhaps it is a trick of the locals so foreign people avoid it and they can have it for themselves. NOT. Hel Peninisula is a very popular summer destination among polish people but if someone travels to the north of Poland, that peninsula is eye catching in the map. Then you google it and you see some heavenly images. And then you decide to visit. #ourstory
Being a narrow strip of land 34 km long in the Baltic Sea is so exciting to roatrip it and reach Hel city at the very tip of the peninsula.
We arrived by car on a Sunday morning and the city was full of people. Driving along the peninsula was quite impressing, the feeling that you drive in a very narrow piece of land makes it even more exciting.
Arriving at the city of Hel, what you see is a village that has nothing to do with the glamorous and high-class Sopot. Hel is a fishing village with a promenade at its centre with small restaurants, cafes and shops, the infamous beach, a harbour and World War II monuments. It has a rich history since it became part of Poland after WWI and it was used as a defensive point during WWII. It is strange but what stroke to me is that memories of the war seem very alive at this city.

We walked along the promenade eating gofre (our favourite) and visiting the little shops. The weather was very nice so we decided to walk along the beach and find a place to sunbathe and swim. While walking, we found Hel harbor and a bit more further war remains and monuments.
The beach was amazing, we reached the furthest point - I think, where the water was nice and the beach more spacious.

Some useful tips:
♬ Don't stay at the first most obvious and populated beach. Walk along the boardwalk until you find the northest part of the sea. It is like paradise. There is one and only beach bar where you can drink a beer or eat an ice cream. If you don't wanna walk take the small cars-taxis to take you there, they are very cheap.
♬ You can get there by boat from Gdansk but make sure you book a ticket and have in mind that the last boat sails back at 17:30, yes quite early.
♬ Do not miss smoked fish! It is so delicious and very cheap! Take it while going to the beach and eat it while drinking a cold beer..
♬ If you decide to take your car be prepared for HUGE traffic jams. So avoid Sundays or even better, avoid taking your car!
