California Roadtrip: Pacific Coast Highway

By Debbie - 11:34 AM

Our trip to California could not been done otherwise than to rent a car and cross the legendary Highway -1 - (Pacific Coast Highway), driving along the ocean, starting from Los Angeles and ending in San Francisco
Our flight arrived at LAX in the afternoon so we could not do the trip at once, so we decided to split the trip and spend one night at Santa Barbara.
But let's take things from the beggining:
Athens -> Istanbul -> LAX, after 16 hours of flight and one stop at "Alamo" branch in LAX to pick up the car, we left the bustling streets of LA towards Santa BarbaraThe route was quite easy (we were very tired though) and one hour and a half later, we arrived at our Motel in Santa Barbara.
We woke up the next morning (really early and really jet-lagged), we ate a huge breakfast and our roadtrip begun!! And we hit the US 101!
We passed Santa Maria and towards San Luis Obispo we "stumbled upon" Madonna Inn and we made a stop. We entered the cafe and - although the decoration was not what we expected, a bit "heavy" and old-style - it had amazing sweets!

Continuing to Highway -1- and having the ocean on our left, we met too many Vista Points which helped us to step aside the car and shoot some beautiful photos (and also stretch our legs for a few minutes).
We stopped at Cayucos beach where it started to rain heavily.. A little further down the road, we discovered the Brown Butter Cookie Company and we tried their cookies, made of ocean salt (peanut butter and chocolate).
Due to the bad weather, we didn't enjoy the trip as much as we could have, but we enjoyed a double rainbow over our heads. The scenery had hills, mountains, trees, the cliff on our left and then the ocean.
Nothing prevented our view across the ocean, the water became one with the sky and we couldn't distinguish anything just gazing at the deep blue to where our eye could reach!
We passed over Big Creek Bridge and - the more famous -  Bixby Bridge after we saw Big Sur.

We passed through Carmel, we stopped in Monterey and Santa Cruz and finally, after 10 hours of driving and about 400 miles distance, we entered the city of San Jose at 9 o clock at night.
Entering San Jose, the scenery was completely different of what our eyes were used to all day: traffic, lights and skyscrapers. It was our return to civilization. We validated this contrast by sitting in a McDonald's to eat before checking in to our final destination: San Francisco.

It was a long but idyllic journey. It took us all day to get to San Francisco from Santa Barbara. We started at 10am and arrived at 10pm but the view and the scenery of the road compensated the fatigue.
The distance traveled was 400 miles off the Pacific Ocean with torrential rain, drizzle, sun. Definitely worthed it.

  3. Wow! That view is amazing. I'm guessing the sceneries topped the stress of having to drive around for a long time. Those photos look like they were taken from 30 years ago. I love how they turned out. They look very vintage! The technique brings out the best in the sceneries. I hope you enjoyed the trip. :)
